However, all polypropylene grades are not identical; for example, polypropylene injection molding grades often have high concentrations of chemicals to support the molding process. This enables quick plate production and lower costs but may jeopardize the integrity of samples or compounds stored for long periods in these plates. The problem is especially acute when compounds are stored in solvents such as methanol or DMSO because these great solvents tend to extract extractable compounds such as mold release agents or polymer flow improvers from the polypropylene base material. The BactiGrowth range of specially packaged plates by Porvair Sciences has been enlarged to allow high yield growth of bacteria, yeast, mammalian cells, or insect cells. BactiGrowth plates are produced in platform sizes from 24 to 384-well and are well volumes from 300 μl to 10 ml per puits that suit most applications for cellular growth, in order to conform to automation-friendly ANSI/SBS formats. Every batch of BactiGrowth plates is thoroughly tested to validate their contamination free status, ensuring reproducibility and maintaining customer confidence in the cells grown. It is produced under class 10,000 clean room conditions from ultra-pure quality polypropylene.

In order to make plate interchange easier in automated systems, the families of 96-well carved plates are designed. The only variable is its well volume; all three plates have the same geometry. A specially enhanced version of the plate is available in extractable, medical grade polymer for applications using the GenoGrinder and TissueLyzer. These plates are specifically designed for genomic studies of seed and leaves. The 96-growth, round plates are made of Polypropylene Virgin for minimization of extractable materials. The volume of work per well is 1 ml, and the total volume is 1.1 ml. On getting back from the storage, colored plates help identification. Black plates are suitable for storing compounds that are light sensitive.
