The ability to have accurate, up-to-date and complete information about patients anywhere/anytime empowers physicians to carry out faster, in-depth evaluation and accurate diagnosis--helping deliver superior care. The proliferation of intuitive healthcare models such as pay-for-performance, patient centered medical home model, and accountable care are further making EMRs indispensible. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, along with the Medicare and Medicaid Electronic Health Record Incentive Programs will further fuel the widespread adoption and meaningful use of certified EHR technology. After Stage 1 and Stage 2 of meaningful use, which concentrated on data capture and sharing, and advanced clinical processes, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has introduced the current and final Stage 3, which is more about improving healthcare outcomes with EHR. According to CMS, as of April 2016, more than 498,000 healthcare providers received payment for participating in the Incentive Programs. More than $23.3 billion in Medicare EHR Incentive Program payments have been made between May 2011 and April 2016. And more than 586,000 eligible professionals, eligible hospitals, and critical access hospitals are actively registered in the Incentive Programs as of April 2016. As demonstrating the meaningful use of certified EHRs takes time and resources, organizations need to be well aware of the available solutions to reap quick benefits.Aimed at this, the healthcare IT marketplace is replete with EMR/EHR solutions providers, committed to meeting the certification requirements of meaningful use. Our goal with this special edition is to help healthcare organizations discover best-of-breed EMR/EHR solutions providers.
