| | October 20196UTLOOKHealthcare Tech Alex D'souzaManaging Editoreditor@healthcaretechoutlook.comEmerging technologies such as AI, machine learning, IoT, and wearables are helping a great deal in tackling the rising cases of common sleep disorders. Various AI-based devices, enabled with machine learning algorithms for sleep monitoring, aid physicians in monitoring an individual's sleep in her natural environment for a specific period, eliminating the need for lab tests. Further, deep learning algorithms trained on large Polysomnography (PSG) datasets replicate the respiratory scorings in sleep apnea and limb movements for better analysis of the disorders and faster diagnosis. The AI-enabled tools can not only help diagnose narcolepsy but also predict the success rate of the various disorder therapies. In addition, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine has made sleep disorder monitoring more effective. Enabled with IoT, the CPAP machines of today are more flexible and adaptive to each patient. These CPAP machines can collect and analyze patient data on sleep patterns and adjust according to their needs, while physicians get automatic alerts in case of emergencies.Besides, the home sleep apnea testing (HSAT) devices that include wearables like smartwatches are now used for sleep monitoring, since they can detect biological signals without the need for external sensors. A smartwatch can record a patient's pulse wave and transmit the data to a smartphone. Wearables such as smart clothes and activity bands are placed under the mattress to gain insights into various aspects, including breathing rates and restlessness. The upcoming edition of Healthcare Tech Outlook features a list of leading vendors along with insightful articles from thought leaders in the sleep disorder care arena.
