It is proving indispensible not only in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, but also helping physicians predict health issues that may arise in the future. For a long time X-rays have allowed the physicians to observe the inner working of the human body. However, the recent breakthroughs in higher-resolution CT, MRI, PET, Ultrasound and other imaging technologies coupled with big data, cloud and mobility, are helping probe even deeper, delivering more informed diagnoses for effective treatments and enabling easy collaboration between physicians and patients. Indeed, most healthcare providers have all but given up on film in wake of the flexibility and ease of digital images. As the healthcare providers are generating high-resolution imaging data at an incredible pace, cloud storage is increasingly turning into a cost-effective option. It helps healthcare providers scale with ease, and provide access and sharing of medical images across the healthcare facility. Also, the patients are no longer burdened to carry their imaging reports; the cloud brings entire medical history and associated radiographs to mobile devices. The patients can upload images to second opinion specialist and the physicians can have the data ready before an appointment. On the other hand, big data is addressing the increasing need to efficiently and productively leverage the growing amount of digital medical images. The big data tools are going beyond just tracking the operational metrics such as volume of imaging data and turnaround time to deliver more value by decreasing errors, improving compliance, increasing revenue and evaluating outcomes and quality. Medical imaging is empowering healthcare providers contributing to improved patient outcomes and cost-effective healthcare. In this scenario, our goal with this special edition is to highlight companies that offer best-of-breed medical imaging solutions to enable healthcare providers offer better care. This edition blends thought-leadership from subject matter experts with real stories on what selected vendors are doing for their clients, including exclusive insights from CIOs and CXOs.
