Redefining Vessel Occlusion with Novel Devices

Safe occlusion of saphenous veins, their tributaries, and perforators is key for successfully treating varicose veins and other progressive venous diseases. However, the current minimally invasive techniques are endoluminal and involve heat via radiofrequency or laser, chemicals like sclerosants and glues, or surgical removal of the vein. These procedures, along with electrosurgery and ultrasonic occlusion, are prominent but fail to offer the best solution for all patients. Without proper mechanical occlusion methods, patients with advanced venous disease often suffer from recurrence and severe morbidity.

Amsel Medical, a pre-commercialization stage medical device company, offers a groundbreaking vessel occlusion solution, the SCureClamp, with interdigitation occlusion technology (iDOT). The solution has already received three FDA clearances and a CE mark clearance as a permanent Nitinol implant, which the company believes can become the new standard of care for the minimally invasive surgical and robotic community.

The SCureClamp is the brainchild of Dr. Arnold Miller, who took proactive measures to develop a more elegant, simple, and innovative occlusion solution. The SCureClamp is a novel mechanical occlusion clamp delivered through an 18-gauge hypodermic needle under ultrasound guidance. This eliminates venous reflux without destroying or removing the vein while minimizing issues associated with current interventional technologies.

The use of SCureClamp has been proven through Amsel Medical’s first-in-human feasibility study to close varicose veins. The procedure took less than ten minutes and was well-tolerated without severe post-operative adverse events during the six-month follow-up. It also revealed improvement in patients’ quality of life scoring. After undergoing many preclinical and feasibility studies, it was evident that the SCureClamp could be leveraged in multiple applications, including cardiac, oncology, laparoscopic or even robotic surgical procedures.

Amsel Medical is also working with the military and paving the path to developing temporary clamping devices for assisting individuals facing military trauma injuries. It aims to reduce the front-line deaths associated with non-compressible and junctional hemorrhage, which accounts for an alarming 60 percent of fatalities in battlefield trauma cases. It will offer an accessible, portable, and minimally invasive solution for urgent care of the wounded. To that end, Amsel Medical has received the prestigious U.S. Air Force AFWERX Phase 1 SBIR grant of $2.5 million to develop a temporary clamp that can be used as an artery-specific tourniquet to assist military personnel, especially during wartime. Once the temporary occluder is perfected and adopted by the U.S. military, the company sees a need in the civilian market in trauma areas of natural disasters, emergency room trauma or domestic terrorist attacks.

Amsel Medical is working toward manufacturing and commercializing the SCureClamp by the second half of 2023. It will be rolling out the temporary occluder for the military shortly after, which can be used by civilians in any natural disasters or emergencies. Having received 15 patents, Amsel Medical’s product has successfully become the first-of-its-kind device in the market and will soon reconstruct the vessel occlusion space.
