Named after the dog from the 1980s television series, Lassie is as gentle and helpful as its namesake. It detects volatile organic compounds (VOCs) markers and waste products from the body’s glucose metabolism in exhaled breath, making it easier and painless for patients with diabetes to monitor blood glucose.
The product’s most impressive attribute is its ability to do so without drawing blood. Combining a noninvasive monitoring technology and a smartphone app, Lassie monitors blood glucose in real time without requiring a finger prick or needle to take a sample. Patients can exhale into the portable device. Distinct breath-based markers in the exhaled breath carry a biosignature the device picks up. These markers are then fed into its proprietary algorithm, where glucose levels are calculated displayed, and transferred to a smartphone app. Then the calculated value is also displayed on the app and other powerful health insights, that could even lead to behavioral change, are available.
BOYDSense aims to make finger sticks a thing of the past; just one of many advantages of developing a noninvasive glucose monitor like Lassie.
Other benefits include eliminating false readings due to contamination by substances on the surface of a patient’s hands and limiting waste from disposable testing supplies like test strips or lancets. Lassie eliminates recurring costs for testing supplies, requiring a one-time purchase, except for the mouthpiece. Not only will patients with type 2 diabetes painlessly manage their blood glucose levels, but patients with pre-diabetes can also improve their lifestyle and diet to avoid a diagnosis.

Ben Delhey has more than 20 years of senior management experience in the healthcare industry with a strong focus on medical devices and applications. He has been working with leading diabetes Medtech and Pharma companies such as Bayer-Ascencia, Sanofi, Johnson & Johnson and LifeScan.
Ben Delhey is a specialist in launching new medical devices. During his career in Sales and Marketing, he has released more than 10 diabetes devices and applications which were distributed in more than 25 countries around the world. He was the commercial lead in implementing and executing the new diabetes category of algorithm-based drug-dosing advisors.
