Chairsyde: Preparing Teledentistry for a Healthy Future
Loven Ganeswaran, Co-Founder and CEO , Chairsyde
The aphorism “a picture is worth a thousand words” has long been the guiding principle for dental practitioners. During every patient interaction, dentists often rely on images and drawings to increase patients’ oral hygiene awareness. Dentists even explain different treatment procedures in pictorial forms. Now, considering the critical role of illustrated content in imparting oral health education to patients, what if one goes a step further and delivers the same knowledge through videos?
Loven Ganeswaran—a renowned dentist, dental trainer, and the founder of Chairsyde—believes that if a picture can paint a thousand words, a video can portray a thousand pictures. Ganeswaran explains that today video is one of the primary content formats. Dentists can thus leverage this trend and create interactive educational videos for different dental problems and deliver it to their patients through mobile applications. And as patients become more aware of the benefit of higher quality dental care options, dentists can also drive significant growth in their practice.
Interestingly, this is where Chairsyde’s cornerstone lies—to help dental practitioners connect with their patients virtually. Being the embodiment of Ganeswaran’s passion for educating his patients on better oral hygiene, Chairsyde has purpose-built an eponymous platform for empowering dentists to deliver their educational content through interactive videos. “It gives me immense satisfaction to be able to deliver a platform to my colleagues and help them improve the oral health of their patients by offering virtual education,” enthuses Ganeswaran, the co-founder and CEO of Chairsyde.
Built by dentists, for dentists…
Narrating what kindled the initial idea of Chairsyde, Ganeswaran recalls the time he and his friend Kirishan Sivanandan ran dental camps and awareness programmes across various orphanages in a civil war-torn Sri Lanka. When Ganeswaran revisited one of the orphanages two years later, he was amazed to see that the kids remembered the hygiene procedures he taught earlier in an interactive, sing-song manner. In the words of Ganeswaran, “I thought, why can’t we educate more children and adults patients in more interactive ways?” And precisely, the quest to find an answer to this question led to the genesis of Chairsyde.
Today, the proven capabilities of the Chairsyde’s platform have made it a primary choice of tool in delivering virtual education regarding oral hygiene amidst the ongoing social distancing norm. To help dentists further in their virtual dental practices, Chairsyde has also added a gamut of other digital functionalities around end-to-end teledentistry services. “With the current iteration of our SaaS platform, every dental practice will be able to seize the telehealth opportunities for improving their businesses and patient’s health,” adds Ganeswaran.
Elaborating on how Chairsyde today empowers dentists to deliver better care amidst the pandemic, the CEO explains that the platform takes into account the conventional patient interaction at dental practices and translates that virtually.

Ganeswaran highlights, “From scheduling a dentist appointment to finalising its payment, our AI-powered teledentistry platform considers every step you need to take when communicating with your patients.” Dentists can offer virtual consultation services to their patients and maintain goodwill with their existing patients through regular check-ups. They can also access patients’ complete medical history to understand their oral health problems better and send them post-consultation summaries through the platform as well.

What’s more? Being developed by dentists, Chairsyde addresses many of the persisting issues of the space. For example, there have been instances of medico-legal cases where patients claimed to be inadequately informed about their health condition. To help dentists protect themselves from such litigations, Chairsyde provides the option for tracking consultation steps, including health conditions and treatment options discussed. It also allows dentists to provide informed evidence to their patients. Moreover, the NHS and HIPAA-compliant platform ensures that the patient data and the communication between the patient and the dentist is always protected.
Today, how these features benefit the dental practitioners warrants a case study. Recently one of the dental practices had integrated Chairsyde’s platform to stay operational during the lockdown. Once the platform was implemented, every patient started using the app to seek online consultations before physically seeing the dentists. It offered the practice facility a way to prioritise emergency patients and allot time to each patient more efficiently. As a result, critical patients benefitted from an increased appointment availability of about 40 percent.
Notably, this is one but many successful use cases of Chairsyde’s innovative video consultation services that is delivered through their teledentistry platform. By and large, this teledentistry approach has helped dental practitioners improve their revenue by 32 percent after the initial drop of 70 percent at the beginning of the pandemic. To gain more traction of teledentistry, Chairsyde is now offering a free subscription of the platform to dentists. Ganeswaran extols, “Understanding the value of good treatment, patients are also increasingly opting for teledentistry solutions.”
With such a favourable wind under its wings, Chairsyde is now enhancing its features and functionalities further. On that front, Chairsyde has already partnered with IBM to leverage its machine-learning algorithm to sift through volumes of dental X-rays in a short time. Chairsyde is also collecting regular feedback from its pilot dentists and patients to continually add more relevant and beneficial features to the platform. “For Chairsyde, it is not only about delivering care today; we are equally focused on the future of patient care in the post-pandemic world,” concludes Ganeswaran.
