Leading The Charge In Next-Generation Cancer Screening

Precision oncology has been paving the way for a groundbreaking shift in cancer treatment. Empowering oncologists to analyze the intricate genetic makeup of each tumor enables the development of personalized therapies with unprecedented accuracy. This development in cancer care holds the promise of elevating treatment outcomes to new heights. Guardant Health (NASDAQ: GH), as a world-leading biotechnology company, spearheads this transformative movement. Its dedication revolves around prioritizing cancer patients in the firm’s research and development (R&D) endeavors.

Since its inception in 2012, the company has developed advanced blood tests that generate reliable insights across every phase of cancer treatment. By integrating state-of-the-art blood and tissue tests, real-world data, and AI-driven analytics, Guardant Health has unlocked critical insights into the underlying mechanisms of the disease. The arsenal of tests offered by the company plays a significant role across the different stages of cancer care, from early detection to monitoring for recurrence, aiding physicians in selecting optimal treatment modalities for individuals grappling with advanced cancer.

Guardant Health's approach to cancer treatment spans multiple stages, each aimed at providing personalized and effective patient care. Beginning with cancer screening, the company prioritizes the comprehensive evaluation of asymptomatic adults at average risk. The firm’s blood test presents an accurate and simple alternative, initially targeting colorectal cancer and extending its reach across diverse cancer types. The driving force behind this initiative lies in the conviction that enhanced screening accessibility will fuel compliance rates, catalyzing improved treatment outcomes.

Guardant Health offers a blood test in early-stage cancer that detects minimal residual disease (MRD) through circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) analysis. By examining genomic alterations and methylation, this test identifies patients with residual disease who may benefit from additional therapy and helps predict cancer recurrence. This enables clinicians to tailor treatment strategies based on individual patient needs and reduce the risk of disease progression.

“Our mission has always been to conquer cancer with data, and we are continuing to drive it forward today,” says Helmy Eltoukhy, co-founder, chairman, and co-CEO of Guardant Health.

Guardant Health further offers comprehensive genomic testing and identification of actionable mutations that match them to targeted therapies with precision. Real-time monitoring of treatment response allows clinicians to adjust therapy as needed for optimal outcomes.

The company’s holistic approach to cancer care embodies its commitment to delivering personalized and effective care to every patient. Through innovation and data-driven insights, Guardant Health continues to offer hope and improved outcomes to individuals battling this complex disease.

Yet the firm's mission transcends mere diagnostics—it revolves around transforming patient care. As emphasized by Eltoukhy, “One of the core values at Guardant Health that we have prioritized from day one is putting the patient first. We try to imagine all patients as our family members.”

Through its innovative approach, the firm augments patient outcomes and shapes the trajectory of cancer care on a global scale. By harnessing the transformative potential of data-driven insights and cutting-edge technologies, Guardant Health continues to pave the way toward a world where cancer is detected earlier, treated more effectively, and, ultimately, conquered.

Transforming Colorectal Cancer Screening with Shield™

With over 500,000 blood tests conducted by 12,000 doctors to date, Guardant Health’s diagnostics have become integral in enhancing clinical outcomes for cancer patients.

One of its key products is Shield™, a groundbreaking blood test designed to transform colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. This highly accurate test eliminates common barriers associated with traditional screening methods, offering patients a simple and convenient alternative.

Increasing the use of blood-based testing will also greatly democratize access to bestin- class care, making it easier for patients in underserved communities to get access to the latest tests, treatments, and clinical trials

Operating by detecting signals of colorectal cancer in the bloodstream using circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) shed by tumors, Shield provides a non-invasive substitute for colonoscopy, potentially transforming the landscape of colorectal cancer screening. Administering Shield is easy, requiring no special preparation, sedation, or dietary changes during any patient visit. Its non-invasive nature minimizes disruption to patients' daily routines and seamlessly integrates into standard healthcare practices.

To validate Shield's efficacy, Guardant Health conducted ECLIPSE, one of the most extensive cancer screening studies to date. This prospective, multi-site registrational study successfully enrolled its target of 12,750 patients aged 45 to 84 from various regions across the United States. ECLIPSE (Evaluation of ctDNA LUNAR Assay In an Average Patient Screening Episode) involved over 20,000 patients and served as a registrational study to evaluate Shield's performance compared to traditional screening colonoscopy methods.

In the results released in March 2024, Shield exhibited an impressive 83 percent sensitivity in detecting individuals with colorectal cancer (CRC), with a specificity of 90 percent in individuals without advanced neoplasia and those who received a negative colonoscopy result. Furthermore, the test demonstrated a sensitivity of 13 percent in detecting advanced adenomas. Shield also exemplified significant adherence to CRC screening in real-world settings. Among the initial 8,000 individuals for whom the test was ordered, an impressive 90 percent completed the test, underscoring the potential of blood-based screening to improve screening rates significantly.

With screening rates currently falling below the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s goal of 80 percent, Guardant Health's blood-based screening test offers an accurate and convenient solution via a simple blood draw, presenting a promising opportunity to increase screening rates and ultimately save lives.

The publication of the ECLIPSE study in The New England Journal of Medicine strongly validates the robust clinical data and Shield's promising potential. Guardant Health remains optimistic that offering an accurate blood test holds the key to reducing preventable colorectal cancer fatalities.

Highlighting the company’s expected progress with Shield, Eltoukhy says, “2024 will be a pivotal year for our screening business as we prepare to launch our Shield IVD test following expected FDA approval.

We are excited to see the impact our test will have on CRC screening when it is broadly launched later this year.”

Promoting Proactive Cancer Screening

Guardant Health's blood tests have proven critical in the successful cancer screening of countless patients, among them an inspiring individual named Dennis. His journey illustrates the transformative impact of innovative screening technologies in promoting early detection and proactive health management.

  • One of the core values at Guardant Health that we have prioritized from day one is putting the patient first. We try to imagine all patients as our family members

Dennis–conscious about maintaining his health–diligently followed a balanced diet, engaged in regular exercise, and never missed his annual check-ups. However, when it came to colon cancer screening, Dennis was not as proactive as he expected himself to be. His reluctance towards screening was partly rooted in a family history marred by cancer. Having lost his father to smoking-related lung cancer, Dennis was aware of the elevated cancer risks faced by men of color. Despite this awareness, he struggled to prioritize colon cancer screening amidst the demands of his roles as a husband, father, and active community member.

After years of postponing his screening, Dennis's doctor introduced him to Shield™ during a spring 2022 visit. This new screening method promised convenience without the need for special preparation or invasive procedures. Intrigued by its simplicity, Dennis opted to undergo the screening. Dennis fortunately received normal results from his Shield test, easing concerns of colon cancer. However, the experience prompted him to reflect on the risks he had taken by delaying his screening. Determined to prevent others from making the same mistake, he embarked on a mission to educate his community about the importance of colon cancer screening and the availability of alternative options like Shield.

Speaking on Guardant Health's mission, Eltoukhy emphasizes, “Increasing the use of blood-based testing will also greatly democratize access to best-in-class care, making it easier for patients in underserved communities to get access to the latest tests, treatments, and clinical trials.”

Looking ahead, Eltoukhy envisions a future where a simple blood test during an annual check-up becomes central to personalized healthcare, empowering primary healthcare physicians to craft precise wellness plans for each patient and leverage comprehensive insights obtained from bloodbased testing. By expanding the utilization of blood-based testing, Guardant Health facilitates easier access to the latest tests, treatments, and clinical trials, enhancing the longevity and well-being of all patients, irrespective of their treatment journey.
