Alio has obtained its most recent FDA clearance. The second clearance introduced three more parameters to the company's revolutionary remote patient monitoring platform: hematocrit, hemoglobin, and potassium.

The technology comprises a SmartPatch, hub, and portal that record clinical-grade parameters for care teams non-invasively. Alio allows patients and their care providers to continuously monitor their status by sending actionable notifications. The SmartPatch is now approved for monitoring critical parameters such as skin temperature, auscultation, heart rate, hematocrit, hemoglobin, & potassium.
While the technology may be used to monitor a variety of chronic illnesses, the company's first emphasis is on people suffering from End-Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD). Only recently, there has been little progress in care management or novel solutions for dialysis patients and their care teams. Individuals with ESKD are at a higher risk of hospitalization due to complications such as fluid overload, dyskalemia, and others. However, the present best practice only checks critical variables via a monthly blood sample, whereas the Alio SmartPatch gathers data every few hours without any pain.
Alio's technology is now officially ready for commercial implementation, allowing healthcare providers and hospitals to bridge the care gap by better-linking physicians to their patients without needing more frequent trips to any clinical site. This would eventually save healthcare expenditures and help prevent adverse health outcomes because 65 percent of dialysis-related hospitalizations are avoidable. Yet, given that the average ESKD patient in the United States is hospitalized twice a year for an average of 11 days, resulting in national spending of more than 12 billion dollars, the potential is huge.
