The premier virtual Opioid Use Disorder treatment provider will cover service gaps for recently jailed patients battling opioid addiction.
FREMONT, CA: “Nearly one-in-five incarcerated people struggle with opioid use disorder, and unfortunately, opioid-related overdose is the leading cause of death for those released from jail or prison," says Justin Guadagno, Chief Commercial Officer at Bicycle Health. Bicycle Health, the leading telehealth provider of comprehensive medical and behavioral health therapy for opioid use disorder (OUD), has joined Wellpath and the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP). The cooperation will enable patients to receive Bicycle Health's evidence-based, life-saving clinical care model, which provides virtual Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) therapies to FBOP Residential Reentry Center residents (RRC).
“Our collaboration with Wellpath creates an entirely new, scalable approach to rehabilitation that will give people a fighting chance to achieve long-term recovery when they re-enter society,” adds Guadagno.

Buprenorphine, an FDA-approved medicine that reduces harsh opioid withdrawal symptoms, aids in overdose prevention, and promotes long-term recovery, has been widely successful in reducing opioid abuse. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has determined that MOUD treatment protocols are underutilized in criminal justice settings. Our collaboration's primary objective is to increase the availability and clinically effective application of MOUD among underprivileged patients.
Bicycle Health's virtual treatment model, which has much greater patient retention rates and significantly lower no-show rates than in-person norms, will provide clinical and behavioral therapy to a population in need. The partnership between Bicycle Health and Wellpath will expand access to MOUD in RRCs in 42 states. Bicycle Health and Wellpath intend to expand the service to address the recovery requirements of formerly jailed patients to enhance their health and the health of the community as a whole and reduce recidivism.
The Bicycle Health virtual care concept, includes telehealth consultations, medication management, access to peer support groups and psychotherapy, and routine in-home diagnostic testing. Medical, behavioral health, and clinical support staff at Bicycle Health are committed to addressing the many factors that hinder patients' access to MOUD treatment, including social determinants of health (SDOH). This makes Bicycle Health an ideal provider to fill gaps in care for a particularly vulnerable population.
"Telehealth is now well understood to be a widespread, highly effective treatment delivery option for patients with opioid use disorder, which is why we chose to work with Bicycle Health. In doing so, we were able to overcome many of the obstacles that prevent formerly incarcerated people from getting the MOUD treatment they need," says Thomas Pangburn, MD, Chief Clinical Officer at Wellpath. "This collaboration helps streamline the process for reentry by providing evidence-based and convenient treatment options, which can make a real difference for those struggling with opioid addiction."
