Detection Technology has joined a research consortium to develop a novel dental and head imaging method.
FREMONT, CA: Medical imaging is vital in many medical contexts and at all significant levels of health care. Diagnostic imaging services are crucial for verifying, analyzing, and recording numerous diseases' progression and treatment responses. Detection Technologies, a global leader in X-ray detector systems, has joined a research consortium to create X-ray detector solutions for an innovative dental and head imaging technique. The consortium intends to make a mobile cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) system with distributed computing and diagnostics. Advanced X-ray detectors, artificial intelligence (AI), and edge-cloud computing will be utilized.
The primary research objective of the three-year TOMOHEAD project is to improve the image quality and computation efficiency of the CBCT radiographic imaging technology. CBCT was chosen because it provides tiny, lightweight, and cost-effective X-ray imaging systems with high spatial resolution and low radiation doses, enhancing the end-user and patient experience.

In the initial phase, Detection Technology will assess the suitability of CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) and IGZO (Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide) detector technologies for an imaging application. In addition to the advanced development of photo-counting detectors, the scope of the research will also encompass algorithms and software.
Professor Miika Nieminen of the Research Centre for Health Sciences and Technology at the University of Oulu is in charge of the project. Academic project partners include Assistant Professor Erkki Harjula of the University of Oulu Centre for Wireless Communications, whose research group focuses on wireless system-level architectures for future healthcare, and the research group of Samuli Siltanen, Professor of Industrial Mathematics at the University of Helsinki, which is part of the Centre of Excellence for Inverse Modelling and Imaging.
Business Finland finances the undertaking. The project's overall budget is around EUR 5.4 million. The budget allocation for public funding is around 3 million euros, of which Business Finland will provide 2.6 million euros to the consortium. Planmeca and Detector Technology are the two corporations receiving money under this project.
As in-kind partners, the initiative comprises Nvidia Corp, MVision AI, Disior, Techila Technologies, and Pohde. The project is a component of Nokia's Competitive Edge initiative.
