Covid-19 has accelerated the adoption of technology in healthcare, and the UAE has been at the forefront of this trend.
FREMONT, CA: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is setting the bar high in terms of healthcare innovation. In February 2023, Emirate Health Services (EHS) launched an innovation strategy that focuses on building local skills, boosting innovation in companies, adopting pilot projects and building a strong ecosystem of healthcare startups. One of the key objectives of this approach is to increase the sustainability of innovations in the health industry.
During the pandemic, EHS released an app that assisted patients in scheduling appointments and registering for vaccinations as well as providing information for patients. Consequently, they set up a virtual clinic where people could consult a doctor from home. The improvements used in these improvements continue to be used today to provide greater mobility. AI and machine learning is adopted in the UAE to make predictions. The EHS used these tools during the pandemic to compile patient data and identify those at risk and most likely to require hospitalisation. These forecasts aided in determining the individuals who require immunisations and hospital services. The knowledge of G42 Healthcare facilitates the development of the fundamental big data model, simplifies administrative procedures, enhances data accuracy, and minimises human data entry.

The UAE has historically depended on reputable foreign players to develop local ecosystems and skill sets. EHS is carrying on this heritage by hosting a series of panel discussions during the Arab Health Expo and conference and finishing with many agreements with regional and global actors. EHS also unveiled a slew of smart health initiatives, programs, and apps, including telemedicine, chatbot services, electronic visits, electronic medical records, and electronic health records (EMR/EHR).
Additionally, EHS has commenced two ground-breaking initiatives, Care AI and Digital Twin, the first of their kind in the area. The Care AI system uses AI to monitor itself, track patient behaviour and mobility, and use computer vision to help clinicians diagnose patients. Treatment AI also makes use of AI technology to continually enhance the quality of the patient's treatment depending on data gathered about their condition.
While concurrently lowering breakdowns and maintenance work by up to 20 per cent, the Digital Twin initiative seeks to minimise the carbon footprint of healthcare facilities by reducing energy usage by up to 30 per cent. The utilisation of digital twins will be utilized to track and forecast carbon emissions as well as to maximise the use of renewable energy sources like solar power.
In terms of healthcare innovation, the Emirate Health Services plan demonstrates the UAE's commitment and progress. A robust ecosystem of healthcare companies and local talent is driving the UAE's position as a global leader in healthcare innovation.
