PHYSICIANS ANTICIPATE A REBOUND IN HEALTHCARE VOLUME IN 2022, AND TELEHEALTH IS THEIR PREFERRED STRATEGY FOR IMPROVING PATIENT ACCESS

Physicians anticipate continuing to provide telehealth services even when in-person visits return. According to the survey, sixty to 84 percent of physicians were actively offering telehealth services. Twenty percent, on average, of these physicians implemented telehealth during the pandemic, and 80 percent plan to continue doing so in the future as part of a hybrid care model for at least a few hours per day or one day per week. More than half of all physicians surveyed believe telehealth is less expensive than in-person visits for their practice, and two-thirds believe that telehealth visits are effective, particularly for follow-up visits and nonurgent primary-care consultations.

PHYSICIANS ANTICIPATE A SHIFT IN CARE AWAY FROM HOSPITALS AND PRIMARILY INTO PATIENTS' HOMES

The shift from hospitals to other locations, including patients' homes, for in-person care has accelerated since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2025, respondents anticipate that patients will receive care in their homes 1.5 to 2.5 times more frequently than they do today. By 2025, they anticipate that an average of 35 percent of all palliative care, mental health care, primary care, and physical therapy services will be provided at home. For three services—intensive care, emergency care, and dialysis—they anticipate home care to more than double but achieve a lower absolute percentage of services delivered at home.
