It all began when enterprise architect, Sushmita Chatterjee’s, daughter started pursuing a S.T.E.M. career. As a technologist who has worked with various technologies starting from mainframe to current day AI/ML—and also as a mother concerned about her daughter’s career path in education & learning applying S.T.E.M.—Sushmita realized that the health and life sciences learning/training pedagogy hadn’t changed much in the last two decades. “Despite all the technological advancements that had ushered in during that span elsewhere, education and training in the healthcare space were still cast in the same age-old molds,” she says.

Sushmita wanted to change this status quo. Her mission was to enhance health and life sciences learning/training for promoting more positive outcomes. At the same time, Sushmita wanted to broaden the scope of leveraging digital technology to understand more about the human body and health. “My father had an untimely demise from a heart attack, and the only source of information was a verbal assessment by the doctor,” she says. This experience provided an added impetus for Sushmita to dive deeper into finding the right technologies that can revolutionize knowledge exchange in the health and life sciences industry—from surgery to patient education. And so, she interacted extensively with the educator community and probed into the ways she could bring better engagement in the medical teaching and learning techniques that also saves time and cost.

It was during this time she participated in the New York VR (NYVR) meetup—a community fostering the development and application of virtual reality (VR) technology. “It was still the dawn of the AR/VR industry, and I suddenly had this thought: why can’t we use VR to transform the learning spaces? The technology could evidently enhance engagement and reduce the time taken for learning,” Sushmita enthuses. “And if that contextual information is mined via AI/ML, it can also help us get closer to finding the symptoms and reason as well as allow us to update content with latest available data.” The thought later translated into establishing her EdTech startup, Learnroll, in 2015. Learnroll piloted its Health VR applications with high school students and found out first-hand that VR lessons were instrumental in addressing the practical use of case-based scenarios, reducing the time to learn and enhancing the engagement factor including transformation/change of those students who were not fond of S.T.E.M. subjects using traditional delivery methods.

By 2019, the firm also started getting a lot of inbound requests from the healthcare community. “While interacting with the healthcare professionals to develop content, they started realizing that Learnroll can revolutionize education and training for continuing medical education as well,” notes Sushmita, founder, CEO, and CTO of Learnroll. The firm consequently pivoted its focus on the broad spectrum of healthcare and medical education and training.

Leveraging AR, VR, and 3D technologies, VRMedHub allows training providers to create customized 3D spaces for their audience that facilitate personalized, expansive, and secure collaborations and training. VRMedHub can be used for low cost, seamless and faster low to medium fidelity content production in nurses’ training, physician and physician assistants’ collaborative training, and patient and caregiver education.

VRMedHub, unlike Classimmerse, is based on WebXR—a new W3C API standard online demand service platform that is device agnostic and also allows those without intent to use VR devices to use 3D only. Thus, it can be accessed using a web browser without having to install extra plugins or software. “It’s as simple as connecting on a collaborative platform, like Zoom or Google Duo over the web,” Sushmita asserts. All it needs is a secure browser with high-speed internet and a PC or VR headset to collaborate and learn on this 3D platform.

Incredibly, this kinesthetic mode of learning—using visuals, voices, and haptics—put forth by these two platforms can indeed be instrumental for students who have reading difficulties. On a similar note, these platforms also address the motion sickness concerns of VR simulations, enabling learners to avail the gamification features on the platforms while being perfectly seated. Following suit is the platform’s advanced analytics that gains insights from learners’ experiences and helps trainers iteratively build content that is ideal and engaging enough.

Blazing a Trail Ahead

With remote learning becoming the norm today, Sushmita believes that her company is barely scratching the surface of a trailblazing innovation; Learnroll still has much work left to do in the healthcare and medical education and training space. A testament to this is Learnroll’s ongoing efforts to integrate AI capabilities like natural language processing (NLP).

Sushmita notes “Our future plans are to add advanced medical haptics, advanced medical viewer and AI/ML notes, advanced auscultation(audio), and integrate based on industry healthcare & simulation standards.”

“The time is now for the healthcare and medical community to transform healthcare and medical learning and training with VR/AR, and Learnroll wants to be at the helm of it,” she concludes.
