LookDeep: Improving Patient Safety with AI-Driven Virtual Monitoring

Narinder Singh’s conviction to improve healthcare using AI originated from a personal experience. His mother was diagnosed with interstitial lung disease, eventually requiring a lung transplant. During the weeks spent at his mother’s bedside during her recovery, Singh observed how doctors and nurses delivered care and how poorly technology supported the caregivers.

“In a typical hospital setting, a nurse may spend only an hour or two with each of their five to six patients, while doctors have even less interaction,” says Singh, CEO. “As a result, patients can be largely unobserved for most of their hospital stay.”

LookDeep was established with a mission to use technology to help caregivers attend to patients more effectively. Using artificial intelligence and computer vision, its proprietary VisionAI technology enables continuous observation of all hospital patients so clinical teams can be ever-present for every patient. “Our technology keeps the medical staff updated on every patient while leaving the decision-making power to them,” says Singh.

AN EFFECTIVE SOLUTION TO REDUCE HOSPITAL FALLS

Virtual sitting has been a part of healthcare for over a decade, with reported successes in reducing falls. However, the national fall rate in U.S. hospitals has remained largely unchanged. The high costs associated with the technology and the workforce required to operate it make the technology more inaccessible. VisionAI technology addresses this challenge by transforming virtual monitoring into a comprehensive, hospital-wide fall prevention strategy, thereby enhancing accessibility and effectiveness across the entire facility.

LookDeep’s zero-cost hardware endpoints, including two cameras, audio and an AI engine, allow hospitals to deploy virtual strategies hospital-wide without costly infrastructure. The AI component creates a virtual safety zone around each patient, alerting the observer when an individual moves into a risky position and intervening before a fall. Hosted on a cloud-based system, the solution seamlessly integrates with existing healthcare infrastructure and offers increased flexibility. A straightforward deployment model allows institutions to start with a few rooms and scale up as needed.

In the case of Baptist Memorial Health Care, one of the country’s largest not-for-profit healthcare systems, partnering with LookDeep turned out to be the solution for the IT management and scalability challenges they faced with previous inpatient telemedicine solutions.

Pairing its virtual fall prevention platform with the telehealth team turned the application into a sophisticated virtual inpatient command center that offered ample support to the hospital bedside units. The institution saved nearly 50,000 hours of staff time monitoring close to 500 patients during the first year of implementation at a single hospital. Approximately 2,300 alarms were raised, which led to about 1,600 interventions on potential falls.

THE FUTURE OF VIRTUAL SITTING

Innovation is at the heart of LookDeep’s operations, and the Infinity Watch is a groundbreaking leap forward that enables human-AI collaboration at scale to systematically address falls in a hospital. The product enables a single person to oversee potentially hundreds of patients simultaneously, enabling efficiency that drives significant cost reduction and broader reach.

Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing patient care by enhancing the ability to see and hear patients in ways that were previously impossible. Bringing VisionAI to hospitals at scale will be a game-changer for improving patient outcomes, streamlining care delivery, and enabling proactive interventions that significantly elevate the standard of care

An industry leader in security, LookDeep is SOC 2 Type II Certified and a HIPAA Compliant Technical Platform. Video feeds generated by the system are peer-to-peer and the information is processed locally by AI, enhancing security compliance and minimizing risks. Features that respect patient privacy, like a virtual curtain, further enable patients to maintain their dignity during intimate procedures.

The driving pillar behind the company’s success is a team of professionals with extensive expertise in nursing and healthcare operations. LookDeep's director of nursing, Tiffany Wyatt, brings 20 years of clinical experience and a strong background in managing remote patient monitoring teams. COO Michael OBrien applies rigorous operational discipline, honed through his service in the U.S. Navy, to ensure precision and reliability in every solution.

VisionAI technology holds limitless potential beyond conventional monitoring, catering to critical aspects of patient care like mobility, sleep disturbances and readiness for discharge. LookDeep aims to expand these capabilities and integrate more deeply into clinical workflows to empower caregivers with advanced technological tools that elevate the standard of healthcare.
