CT-P17 has the potential to be a superior biosimilar for inflammatory conditions, improving patient satisfaction by reducing injection-site pain, enhancing comfort, and promoting better disease management.
Fremont, CA: A recent French study has shown that a high-concentration, citrate-free adalimumab biosimilar provides stable or improved patient satisfaction, even among those transitioning from the originator product or other biosimilars. This research reinforces the biosimilar's role as a valuable treatment option for individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases (CIRD).
The study, which included 189 patients with stable IBD or CIRD, found that satisfaction remained consistent or improved after switching to the high-concentration biosimilar. Patients transitioning from low-concentration biosimilars reported a notable increase in satisfaction, appreciating the smaller injection volume and easier administration. This improvement is likely due to the absence of citrate, which is known to cause injection-site pain and irritation.

This research emphasises the importance of patient-centric design in managing inflammatory conditions. This biosimilar may improve treatment adherence and lead to better disease by addressing common issues associated with injection management.
The study also indicated that patients who switched from citrate-containing adalimumab formulations were more satisfied with the citrate-free biosimilar than those already using citrate-free products. This highlights the significant tolerability benefits of the citrate-free formulation.
These findings align with previous research demonstrating the safety and efficacy of switching from the originator adalimumab to the biosimilar in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
Importantly, biosimilars offer a cost-effective approach to treatment without compromising quality or patient experience. This is particularly crucial in chronic conditions where long-term medication adherence is essential.
This study could encourage greater acceptance of biosimilars among patients and healthcare providers by demonstrating high levels of patient satisfaction. With its potential to improve patient comfort and adherence, the high-concentration, citrate-free adalimumab biosimilar represents a significant advancement in treating inflammatory conditions.
