FREMONT, CA: “IT isn’t just a part of the business – it is the business” says Brian Prentice, Research VP, Gartner in an interview. He shines light on the evolution of the digital business and its repercussions on the app development strategies that take multi-pronged approach in their development and maintenance lifecycle.

Drivers of Application change

Prentice believes that digital business and rapid pace of IT change are the biggest drivers of application change; mobile plays a huge factor as businesses continue to see growth in a range of different devices. He says wearable technology will only add to complexity as well as Internet of Things (IoT). Organizations will need to figure out how to coordinate all of these different touch points into something meaningful, which has a tremendous impact on application development. Prentice acknowledges that it’s a huge challenge for application developers to design their operations and expertise on how they can get extra functionality into products.

Prentice suggests businesses need agile, dynamic, continuous evolving, ecosystem based methods to stay ahead; in the digital economy businesses survival is based on handling complex application strategies including analytics, customer application, mobile and cloud-based applications. He says the key challenge for today’s applications professional is to reinvent applications strategies to align with the new digital reality, while supporting innovation businesses need to remain competitive.

Prentice suggests addressing the current generation of smartphones and tablets is not enough. Businesses must prepare for a more complex future with multi-channel and multi-device approaches, all the while supporting cross-platform deployment.

Increasing Business Demand

Prentice remarks Old styles of application development simply can’t deliver the results a digital-age business need as new, innovative and disruptive technologies evolve. Bi-modal IT, DevOps, and cloud/mobile app development are all necessary ingredients for a modern application development practice. He expresses Web Oriented Architecture (WOA) is the new focal point as it provides a simple interoperability model that also enables a significant amount of agility and flexibility.

Prentice concludes saying the businesses objective is to figure  how they  will lead its enterprise into a new world where the physical and digital boundaries start to blur, new opportunities spawns a new generation of competitors and traditional industries, industry models and industry leaders will be disrupted. Application leaders must be ready to step up to that challenge and seize the opportunity to help lead their organizations into the age of digital business.
