Chronic disease osteoporosis weakens bones, making them more prone to breaking from a fall or, in extreme cases, from twisting or even sneezing. With brief reads, videos, slide slides, and podcasts, the new tool aims to assist users in navigating the frequently challenging and perplexing process of managing osteoporosis. Patients, medical professionals, and care partners expressed how difficult it can be for individuals to comprehend medical jargon and the essential procedures for managing and preventing osteoporosis. Therefore, the tool's content was created with the patient's perspective.
The homepage, or entry point, aids patients in selecting the path that best suits their unique requirements. People can investigate risk factors, what to do if they have fractured a bone or have just received a diagnosis, and how to continue managing their osteoporosis along three different paths. The application is simple to use and offers users useful advice on diet, exercise, diagnosis, drugs, therapy, fall prevention, and how to interact with healthcare professionals.
People often suffer from avoidable fractures and long-term disability due to a lack of understanding and attention to the importance of bone health, which leads to missed opportunities to develop and maintain bone strength.
"We know that it can be difficult for people to understand their risks for developing osteoporosis and what their treatment options are when dealing with a serious condition like this," said Lindsey West, BHOF Chief Program Officer. "We created Your Path to Good Bone Health so that everyone will have the opportunity to learn more about this disease and make informed decisions when it comes to their bone health."
Osteoporosis patients and the medical experts that treat them contributed input for creating Your Path to Good Bone Health, which Amgen and UCB funded.
