1. Neuromodulation for Obstructive Sleep Apnea Treatment

Sleep apnea, a sleep disorder characterized by pauses in breathing or periods of shallow breathing during sleep, is treated with a continuous positive airway pressure device, (C.P.A.P). However, according to various reports, more than 40 percent of sleep apnea patients refuse to wear the device. Today, organizations are marketing an implant for delivering simulation to open key airway muscles during sleep. The implant is controlled by a remote patch that helps synchronize the intake of air with the action of the tongue using a breathing sensor and a stimulation lead, powered by a small battery.

2. Hybrid Closed-Loop Insulin Delivery System

The hybrid closed-loop insulin delivery system helps make Type 1 diabetes more manageable, according to the panel. For stabilizing the food glucose, the technology enables direct communication between insulin pump and the continuous glucose monitoring device. The technology replaces the “open loop” concept that requires a patient to use the information from their continuous glucose monitor to determine how much insulin to inject.

3. Next Generation Vaccine Platforms

As per the reports, innovators will be upgrading vaccine infrastructure for the development of new vaccines at a faster pace. Organizations are also focusing on breaking ground on novel mechanisms for seamless vaccine delivery to a wide population. Companies are adopting innovative methods to develop flu vaccines using insects, tobacco plants, and nanoparticles. In 2018, a plaster-sized patch for the flu vaccine is expected to hit the market space.
