Express Scripts has launched a new feature on their new Express Scripts app, making it easy and secure for consumers to access digital COVID vaccination records.

FREMONT, CA: Express Scripts, an Evernorth company, makes it easier for consumers to digitally access their vaccination records and provide evidence of immunization via its safe and secure mobile app. Members of health plans managed by Express Scripts who have received or are scheduled to receive their COVID-19 vaccination at a pharmacy can now access their vaccination records through the Express Scripts mobile app and, if desired, show a scannable QR code as proof of immunization.

“We are committed to putting our members in control of their personal health information. As proof of vaccination becomes essential for safe travel, dining, work and school, our Express Scripts app will offer our members a simple, secure digital option for storing and showing their vaccination credential when needed,” says Dr. Glen Stettin, chief innovation officer at Evernorth, which is a founding member of the Vaccination Credential Initiative (VCI). “Pharmacies are a convenient option for getting a COVID vaccine. Our members who choose to get vaccinated at a pharmacy will have access to their vaccination record in the Express Scripts app, automatically—no extra steps required. No more worrying about having to carry, or losing, their vaccination card.”

This functionality will help an increasing number of Express Scripts’ 70 million members. Additionally, the mobile app enables customers to compare drug prices, locate in-network pharmacies, order and manage prescription refills, make payments, and set medication reminders. It is compatible with Android and iOS devices.

The new functionality is based on the SMART Health Card specification, which establishes a secure and verifiable digital or paper copy of an individual’s vaccination information compatible across numerous platforms. The concept and standards for the SMART Health Card were developed by the Vaccination Credential Initiative (VCI), a voluntary partnership of public and commercial organizations dedicated to providing consumers with verified health information. VCI’s fundamental design principles include preserving and maintaining the privacy of individual health data and conforming to any data privacy standards.
