Observia Group: Paving the Way for Meaningful Patient Engagement

Sylvain Bonnet, Managing Director EMEA, Observia GroupSylvain Bonnet, Managing Director EMEA, Observia Group As individuals, we all have different biases and habits that distinguish us from one another. It is remarkable to see how such personal biases influence us as patients, to prefer one pharma brand or one treatment option/care plan over another.

The onus should be on every stakeholder in the care delivery system to adapt to this individual patient behaviour and offer a tailored care journey, from the initial treatment to recommendations on healthy lifestyle habits and follow-up. Not to mention that this approach can also act as a significant driver of integrated healthcare, a goal that the entire medical community is striving to achieve right now.

This ideal, however, is far from reality.

The conventional healthcare delivery model assumes that two patients with similar disease profiles are likely to show similar behavioural traits. Profiling a patient’s personality is mostly reserved for individuals seeking care for psychiatric illness. However, the link between personality characteristics and health is increasingly a topic at medical conferences and studies, as healthcare researchers are interested in the ways that ‘personality’ may predispose to and influence outcomes for both physical and psychiatric illnesses.

For instance, if healthcare professionals (HCPs) start considering the nuanced behaviours of patients, they will be able to modify patient support based on patients’ personal choices, leading to faster patient recovery. Pharma companies, on the other hand, can also leverage this approach in two distinct ways. First, they can customise their marketing efforts and improve treatments based on patient feedback. Second, by understanding patients’ expectations, pharma companies can offer the right psychological and emotional support during the treatment period, thereby addressing the longstanding issues of improving clinical adherence and creating a better life for everyone.

Fortunately, this is precisely what Observia Group brings to the table. The company is committed to helping healthcare professionals optimise patient engagement with an overarching objective of improving patients’ lives worldwide. “It is in our DNA to consider every patient as a unique individual and focus on improving their experience at every step of the care delivery path,” states Sylvain Bonnet, managing director of Observia Group (EMEA) and a reputed thought leader in the European healthcare sector. True to his statement, Observia Group is blazing a new trail in the healthcare tech domain with its innovative personalisation engine—d.tells™. It leverages cutting-edge technologies to assist healthcare and pharma companies in creating the most detailed patient profiles and drive more meaningful patient engagement. It not only helps care providers understand their patient population better but also aids them in pinpointing what triggers a patient to self-manage and better adhere to the treatment plans.

Charting New Territory in Patient Engagement

Observia Group started its journey in 2011 when three young entrepreneurs Kevin Dolgin, Geoffroy Vergez, and Ludovic Atellian embarked on a mission to bridge the unmet needs of patient care models using new technologies and techniques. Initially, they began leveraging SMS-based interactions between healthcare organisations and patients, to improve both HCP’s efforts for patients’ engagement and patients’ adherence to their care plans. Today, Observia Group has bolstered its technical capabilities to scale patient-centric care delivery strategies to new heights.

Personalising E-Health Solutions with d.tells™

Observia Group’s personalisation engine, d.tells™ is a smart engine built on cutting-edge behavioural science and AI algorithms that make it possible to personalise recommendations based on the individual patient profile. “d.tells™ is easily scalable, configurable, and interoperable with any digital e-health service, thanks to our APIs,” underscores Bonnet. The tool combines Observia Group’s 10 years of experience in the healthcare industry along with feedback from HCPs, healthcare companies, and patient populations to ensure a high degree of patient engagement and maximise health outcomes.

To explain how d.tells™ operates, Bonnet cites the instance of modern dating apps where two peoples’ preferences are compared to pair them as potential partners. Likewise, d.tells™ matches a patient’s distinctive needs with different types of care support to zero in on the most suitable treatment option. For this to happen seamlessly, d.tells™ is powered by a secure, dynamic, and digital cloud platform, Observia Patient Cloud (opc™), along with the new gold standard behavioural diagnostic tool, spur™.

opc™ offers best-in-class features and ready-to-launch functionalities such as dashboard, agenda, therapeutic modules, and digital pillboxes that are the basis for any e-health solution. Healthcare professionals can also develop ad-hoc functionalities and integrate them into any existing digital environment.

spur™ is an easy-to-use universal tool that predicts patient behaviour and provides a comprehensive understanding of a patient’s behavioural drivers. Grounded in robust behavioural theory and developed in collaboration with experts across the globe, it focuses on four categories of behavioral drivers: social, psychological, usage, and rationale—hence, its name – spur™. spur™ can help HPCs identify people who are having medical adherence problems as well as provide information about why that may be the case and understand ‘the person behind the patient.’

d.tells™ combines the capabilities of spur™ and opc™ to act as an intelligent engine that can help HCPs personalise healthcare solutions. The profiling outputs from spur’s behavioural diagnostic help HCPs better understand the patient, and at the same time refine the personalisation algorithms of d.tells™, creating the foundation of an improved care delivery model. HCPs can then use opc™ to tailor their care solutions and engage patients. Individualised experience, gamification, push notifications, immediate rewards, as well as a very user-friendly and well- designed platform—all ingredients combine to effectively engage patients with their healthcare.

Driving Measurable Clinical and Behavioural Results through Personalisation

Talking about Observia Group’s successful partnerships, Bonnet shares the example of the collaboration between Observia Group, the AF3M (French Association supporting patients with Multiple Myeloma), and Celgene, a pharmaceutical company.

These organisations joined forces with a common objective to improve the multiple myeloma care pathway and patient experience. The joint venture leveraged Observia Group’s expertise to develop an innovative and personalised support platform called HéMaVie. The core idea of the platform was to improve the lives of patients and facilitate communication between healthcare professionals, patients, relatives, and caregivers via a multi-device, digital platform and a nurse coordinator. Notably, it was among the first-ever programs that was strongly integrated into the patient journey.

The partnership was a massive success and exceeded all expectations. Due to Observia Group’s unwavering commitment to customisation, each patient benefitted from a tailor-made program, set according to their preferences. As HCPs were better informed about patient’s expectations, they could tailor the support with the utmost precision. While it added value for the HCPs, the benefits for patients were also significant. The right emotional and cognitive support offered by the HCPs helped lessen the burden of the disease. Now considered a noteworthy program in France, the HéMaVie platform will be scaled to include other disease areas within haematology while also expanding to different countries.

As another example, Observia Group partnered with a key decision-maker in the global patient-centricity team of a top 10 pharmaceutical company to help ensure the local success of a corporate-level PSP initiative. The idea was to design and develop an innovative, integrated, beyond-the-pill solution for patients and healthcare professionals, and to assist business affiliates worldwide with the implementation of the developed solution. Observia Group took a step-by-step approach based on co-construction and on-going communication with the client’s local team to chalk out a project blueprint. The company also set up a project team comprising several affiliates that would act as pilot partners and early adopters of the solution. After a few months of intensive exchanges and working sessions at both the global and local levels, the blueprint was completed and shared with affiliates. Currently, the client has successfully implemented all pilot initiatives as per Observia Group’s four-pillar methodology, to accurately reflect the patient journey, incorporating both a medical and personal perspective.

Patient Profiling Tools in the Post-COVID-19 World

Even with such impressive success, Bonnet believes that Observia Group’s solutions are scratching the surface of what they can really offer. The true application of their cutting-edge patient profiling tool and personalisation engine will become more apparent in the post-COVID-19 world. The pandemic has already pushed the healthcare industry to connect with patients using telemedicine. And as e-health solutions and telemedicine take increasing precedence in the coming months, patient profiling tools will become a crucial element in remote diagnosis and triage for patients.

Moving forward on that conviction, the company is now particularly poised to take its offering to a global level and partner with companies outside Europe. Observia Group is also expanding its capabilities further and presenting more tailored means of patient engagement. “We are now laser-focused on understanding every patient data, using it to improve our systems, products, and the user experience associated with it,” concludes Bonnet.
