Telemedicine proved its value as an integral part of the evolving healthcare industry by enabling one-to-one interaction between individuals from remote locations. While the advanced healthcare markets have embraced telemedicine as a vital form of care delivery, the rest of the world has largely remained distant to this trend. And Saudi Arabia is not an exception. However, the COVID-19 has forced Saudis and other people globally to change their mindset and embrace telemedicine.

At this juncture, Riyadh-based SANAR, a digital healthcare platform company, is leaving no stone unturned to help more Saudis put an end to their longstanding healthcare problems by adopting telemedicine. Now, people living in even the remote corners of the nation can have access to seasoned specialists in every domain of healthcare. “Through SANAR, they can access quality care from the comfort of their home. They can choose the specialist from the available database of doctors we have and consult with them at the time of choice,” says Ayoub Al Yusuf, CEO of SANAR.

With SANAR, a patient has the liberty to select a doctor based on gender, language, and affiliation. In case they want to consult a specialist, they can choose the specialty type and select the doctor based on their degree and achievements so far. The platform fully automates patients’ journeys starting from booking an appointment to completing the consultation. “With SANAR, we have reduced the time for booking appointments with best-in-class doctors from several months to mere 30 minutes,” says Al Yusuf.

Prioritizing patient safety, SANAR has also brought lab tests into the platform. SANAR sends lab technicians to collect test samples from patients’ doorstep. Further, the test reports are uploaded in patients’ individual unified electronic medical file that contains records of all the prior consultations. The historical record aids doctors to diagnose accurately and prescribe the right medicine. Besides, SANAR also arranges doctors and nurses who can provide physiotherapy and vaccination services by visiting patients’ homes. The company has enabled industry best practices to ensure health practitioners follow the right strategy to complete the process.

In its quest for introducing telemedicine in Saudi Arabia, SANAR has received enormous support from doctors. “Our team of doctors have always stood by us, especially during COVID 19 times,” says Al Yusuf. With millions of the population still unconvinced about telemedicine, SANAR strives to continue educating them about the benefits of telemedicine.

In a case study, during COVID 19 pandemic, a patient with Alzheimer’s disease found it challenging to visit a hospital. Owing to his weak immune system, his family was concerned about the trip. They downloaded SANAR and booked an online appointment with a doctor. The session went smoothly, at the end of which the doctor gave a prescription. Further, the medical tests were also conducted remotely after a medical team collected the sample from the patient’s house. In another case, SANAR helped a family of 16 members living in a suburban area to get full body check-up done through its lab facility.

SANAR has expanded its domain by enabling patients from foreign countries to have a telemedicine consultation on the platform. The company envisions to become the leading digital platform providing healthcare, telemedicine, and home care services. “We are striving hard to collaborate with leading medical practitioners to provide comprehensive coverage in Saudi Arabia and beyond,” concludes Al Yusuf.
