To help doctors and patients alike with this challenge, California-based VM Doc has developed a SaaS-based patient care management platform that enables physicians and patients to have real-time access, visibility, and interoperability of the complete patient medical record, regardless of the underlying EHR or EMR system being used by the doctors. VM Doc gives doctors the ability to access the relevant patient data they need to treat their patients, on-demand, according to their unique workflow. With VM Doc, doctors can spend less time in the EHR, and more time treating their patients. “Patients that use VM Doc, can automatically manage and share their full medical records with any doctor and remove the manual pre-care and post-care notifications with their doctors,” says Dave Anderson, president and CEO at VM Doc.
Co-founded by a doctor who has firsthand experience in handling the inefficiencies caused during patient data management, VM Doc is specifically designed to mitigate the prevalent challenges around digital health faced by healthcare professionals. For instance, the highly unintuitive and complicated user experience offered by EHR systems from different vendors is causing healthcare professionals to spend more time clicking and scrolling in the EHR than actually treating the patient. As a result, doctors struggle with “burnout” of having to use these highly unintuitive systems, and patients are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the lack of personalized treatment by their doctors, causing a higher degree of churn with impacts both doctors and patients. Alternatively, the absence of portability of health data is driving patient discontent as they have to spend time completing manual forms and questionnaires and repeating their complications every time they are at a different clinic, thereby decreasing more time from the doctor-patient interactions.
The company’s SaaS platform works across multiple EHR systems to bridge the digital gap between how doctors and patients’ communities access, manage, and share patient medical data. VM Doc provides doctors with the ability to automate their patient engagement and monitoring workflow, which is especially critical in getting the relevant patient data to the doctor faster, allowing the doctor to fully understand the patient history and diagnose and treat the patients more rapidly.
To assist patients in managing their digital care, the company offers a health passport app (available both on Android and iOS) that enables patients to access and share their health data with any doctor, independent of the EHR systems being used. As a result, VM Doc allows patients to holistically view and self-manage their medical records and health status from an app, eliminating many of the manual, tedious tasks patients are subject to every time they see a doctor. “By enabling patients to own their medical records through our health passport app, patients can finally automate the key pre- and post-care tasks whenever they are treated by a doctor. Our health passport also integrates with wearable, fitness, and nutritional data to help doctors be more effective in remote patient monitoring activities to ensure the best delivery and ongoing management of care,” adds Anderson.![]()
Digital medicine is an exploding field that is hopelessly fragmented and disorganized. VM DOC is our best hope to integrate the various EMR's in a meaningful way
Further discussing the core competencies of his platform, Anderson elaborates, “The security and confidentiality of patient health records is paramount to VM Doc, and therefore, we have the highest level of security and HIPAA compliance across our platform.” More recently, as the COVID-19 pandemic gave rise to increased use of telehealth, it has also significantly increased the opportunities for malicious parties to cause data breaches, particularly across insecure video platforms being used by many provider practices. VM Doc uses a dual-factor authentication and authorization process, as well as robust backend encryption protocols, to ensure that only authorized individuals are allowed to view, manage and share patient data.
With such unparalleled capabilities, VM Doc has ignited several success stories since its inception. In one instance, the company assisted a midsize healthcare provider in overcoming their EHR-related inefficiencies. Initially, the doctors at the client institution were using a highly convoluted EHR system that caused a significant decrease in the time that physicians spend in delivering patient care. Consequently, the patients visiting the client were also dissatisfied with the lack of personal treatment and service they were receiving. VM Doc helped this customer automate their patient care workflows, which allowed the doctors immediate accessibility to the patient medical records. This provided substantial time-savings to the doctors, allowing them to deliver more personalized care to their patients and improving overall patient satisfaction. “Before VM Doc, this provider’s practice was spending 50 percent of their consultation with the patient clicking and scrolling through their EHR to access and then manage the patient record. Since implementing VM Doc, the practice has been able to show a 70 percent reduction in the time they spend in the EHR, time which they have allocated back to treating the patient and delivering care,” adds Anderson.
Moving ahead, VM Doc aims to revolutionize the delivery of digital care across a variety of chronic conditions, by bringing together a community of professionals with a mission to provide better, more aligned, and efficient care for specific illnesses. From a technical standpoint, the company plans to add certain analytic capabilities to help doctors be more predictive and prescriptive in delivering personalized medicine and care to patients. With such a comprehensive roadmap and its revolutionary platform, VM Doc is perfectly poised to fulfill its mission to transform telehealth and digital care delivery.
