Wholomics: Transforming Early-Stage Cancer Diagnosis

Cancer detection tests have made significant strides in aiding individuals in their battle against this disease. Most available screenings are invasive, associated with risks like radiation exposure, or limited in their accessibility. The diversity of screening methods for different cancer types emphasises the need for an integrative screening procedure that promotes early detection and timely intervention.

Wholomics, an innovative biotech company, redefines cancer detection with its inventive multi-cancer serum-based test. Firmly grounded in advanced biology and AI technology, it simplifies and enhances the accuracy of cancer screening by analyzing specific molecular markers in the blood.

“Our tests enable early detection of various cancer types, offering individuals higher chances of survival, more treatment options, and better quality of living,” states Patrick Strasser, co-founder and CEO of Wholomics.

The proprietary test, currently under the process of patenting, can seamlessly be integrated into routine blood work or other blood analyses, requiring only half a milliliter of serum. This sample is then sent to Wholomics’ laboratory or partner facilities, where a series of measurements are conducted.

The Wholomics team analyzes the serum to identify and assess cancer-specific signatures or molecular markers and provides a probability score for different cancer types. Its technology is capable of detecting the signatures right from the earliest stage, allowing earlier detection, potentially months to years before the cancer would be clinically diagnosed. This assessment is then shared with the treating physician.

If no cancer-specific signatures are detected in the blood, the patient is considered likely free from the cancer types within the test’s scope. If a potential cancer risk is identified, the physician can promptly proceed with a follow-up like imaging.

This approach offers a more viable screening solution for a broader population, as compared to conventional imaging methods that are often time-consuming and costly.

While imaging may still be valuable for high-risk patients, Wholomics’ liquid biopsy test brings efficient and accessible cancer screening within reach for a wider demographic.

To determine the effectiveness of the test, Wholomics conducted a trial in collaboration with a biobank in the Netherlands, utilizing retrospective samples for the initial study. This trial comprised more than 100 samples from healthy controls, patients with chronic pancreatitis, and from patients with pancreatic cancer. Including a group with an organ-specific diseases that is often mistaken with cancer and can increase the cancer risk of an individual, brings this study closer to real world healthcare applications.

Wholomics’ serum-based test yielded exceptional results, demonstrating high accuracy in distinguishing between healthy individuals and those afflicted with pancreatic diseases.

In the current medical context, distinguishing between chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer remains challenging as it requires an endoscopic ultrasound examinations. Wholomics is setting up a study in collaboration with a hospital in Germany to validate their approach for accurately differentiating between patients with these and other pre-cancerous and pancreatic diseases, aiming for high accuracy.

While initial studies were focused on pancreatic cancer, the company is now expanding its research to encompass cancer detection across a spectrum of cancer types. It is setting up an extensive biobanking study involving approximately 5,000 patients by the first half of 2024.

Wholomics is currently seeking collaborations with clinics and healthcare professionals, particularly oncologists and clinicians at the forefront of exploring cutting-edge technologies for cancer detection and the differentiation of precancerous conditions from full-blown cancer. It is also initiating pilot studies in partnership with various clinics to refine and expand cancer screening capabilities.

Recognizing the profound impact of cancer on individuals, their families, and the healthcare system, Wholomics strives to provide precise, non-invasive, and efficient screening solutions for its diagnosis. Through pioneering technology and strategic collaborations with medical experts, it is ushering in a future where early cancer detection becomes a tangible and transformative reality.
